So, since it is an airstrip, I assume you don't have any trees in the way between any two points.
Trees are not good for Wi-Fi signal propagation.

Well, Funkfeuer is a couple of networks. We use standard wi-fi routers
which run openwrt (www.openwrt.org) and OLSR  (www.olsr.org) as meshing protocol.
That's pretty much it (in its core). You can make that as cheap as a couple of tens of Euros per node.
However, your requirements might depend on environmental conditions (for example, does the box need to survive blasting heat or icy colds or torrents of rains if they are outdoors).
