Different vendor implementations are quite different hardware wise and a
PITA to support, this projects seems to take away this pain point.

Though the 3GPP standards describe to some extent how stuff should work,
you'll find subtle but evil differences. Some devices require you to
load binary firmware, others require usb_modeswitch with some specific
model-specific tweaks, others just come up as a serial device (ttyUSBx)
as it should be... you want to abstract these differences away and only
provide *one* layer for placing phone calls, SMS, the audio interface,
setting up an Internet connection, etc...
